my own until doing my E38 BMW, I realized that not all manufacturers set "preload" on the coils which could account for clunk as the coil is decompressed leaving a gap between the upper and lower collar of the spring. NOW, I'm also not sure if preload should be set the same for all manufacturers (if not already set) but at least with my BC Coils, they recommend about 4mm of preload(compression) against the spring. In other words, the spring will be compressed 4mm already before installing on the car which should eliminate the slop I was referring to before. Sorry if this is common knowledge and you already know...
